Kidsafe Project
Our Vancouver Fire Fighters' Charitable Society is pleased to be in our 3rd year of committing a total $45,000 to the KidSafe Project Society.
What is kidsafe?
Sparked by the brutal beating of an eight-year-old student in the fall of 1993, The Vancouver Sun Children's Fund Society launched The KidSafe Project to help create safe havens at times when schools are traditionally closed. The project serves at-risk students living in poverty from five inner-city elementary schools: Mount Pleasant, Queen Alexandra, Grandview/Uuqinak'uuh, Macdonald and Florence Nightingale.
School is the centre of the universe for many children. It is where they learn, play, build friendships, eat, discover role models, develop lifelong skills and find help when a crisis arises. What happens when schools are closed for spring, summer, and winter vacations? This is when KidSafe clicks into action.
Donations from The Vancouver Sun readers, organisations, businesses, governments and community-minded individuals enabled KidSafe to get its start. The project was turned over to a community board of directors late in 1995. This innovative project has achieved and demonstrated what can be done for needy youngsters when everyone works together. Principals, teachers, health professionals, police and social service workers have seen significant results. KidSafe is a quality, preventive project that is helping vulnerable elementary students.
