Emily Carr 1951 Fire Truck Restoration

In November of 1951, the Vancouver Fire Department purchased a Canadian built 1951 Bickle-Seagrave fire engine. This truck was built in Woodstock, Ontario, cost $29,800 and weighed in at 14,500 pounds (7 tonnes).

Affectionately named Rudolph due to the unique red light centered on its grill, this fire engine was placed into service at #17 Fire Hall, then located at 41st & Fraser.

This fire engine served the citizens of Vancouver for almost 20 years and was retired in 1970. Shortly thereafter the City of Vancouver donated Rudolph to Emily Carr Elementary on March 8th, 1971.

Rudolph was first refurbished in the winter of 1990 by the students of Eric Hamber and was returned to Emily Carr shortly thereafter.

The most recent restoration journey for Rudolph began in August 2004 when he was removed from Emily Carr Elementary school grounds. That journey is now complete and all the stake holders in this project are extremely pleased with the final outcome. The following individuals and organizations played significant roles in helping Rudolph to complete his journey and return to Emily Carr Elementary.

  • Vancouver Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society
  • Vancouver School Board, Facilities Division
  • Burnaby Auto Body 1986 Ltd.
  • Vancouver Fire Fighters Union Local 18
  • Nahla Hopfe, Emily Carr Parent
  • Emily Carr Parent Advisory Council
