On, Tuesday May 16th, John Wagontall a Fire Fighter from Lethbridge Alberta and Member of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 237 rode through our community on his Cycle for Life Ride across Canada.

At 11:00 a group of 25 fire fighters escorted rider John Wagontall from West Vancouver Fire Hall #2 in Horseshoe Bay across the North Shore and into Burnaby. John received cheques from the 3 North Shore Fire Fighter Locals and Vancouver Fire Fighters Local 18 at a cheque presentation ceremony at the West Vancouver Fire Hall.

John received an escort by West Vancouver Police, West Vancouver Fire Rescue, District of North Vancouver Fire & Rescue, City of North Vancouver Fire Rescue and Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services.

Vancouver Fire Fighters were out in numbers representing half of the group with 13 riders total. Great day for a ride, and Vancouver was well represented by our members once again. Nice job everyone! Hats off to the crew of Vancouver Fire #14 D-Shift for all their help and patience.

In 2004 at a young age of 46, John Wagontall a Fire Fighter for over 20 years was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. John has undergone a lengthy period of treatment. Although the treatments have made John’s short-term prognosis good, his long-term prognosis is not good. John is currently cycling across Canada to raise awareness and Funds for Prostrate Cancer. The Cycle for Life Ride started May 15, 2006 in Victoria BC and is scheduled to end near the end of July in St. John’s NF.
